Dr. Hilarius

Dr. Hilarious is Oedipa’s crazy psychologist who tries to use Oedipa in an experiment of the effect of LSD on suburban housewives. He gives really bizarre advice and does not really seem qualified as a doctor because he makes faces to try and treat his patients. Later when Oedipa visits him in the story to discuss her confusion in resolving the Tristero issues, Dr. Hilarious is super paranoid that fanatics are after him to take him to Israel to be put on war trials for trying to make people go insane with his faces during World War II. He keeps a gun with him, shoots anyone who comes close to the building, and will not leave his office. This growing paranoia is caused by his increasing guilt for what he did during the war and is eating at him mentally. He also claims to have made a face during the war that has a hundred yard radius and threatens to use it on Oedipa and the cops. He is really stressed out and wants the pain and paranoia to go away. - GG
